In an interview with The Week’s Jon Karl, New York City’s rockstar mayor was asked about Republicans trying to make him the face of the Democratic Party.
It seems Republicans believe that showing a handsome, well-spoken Muslim man labeled as a socialist in attack ads will make people dislike Democrats.
Mamdani accepted this challenge.
“Let them.
We don’t need to wonder what life would be like if a socialist won.I won last November, and in the six months since, we’ve done things that were once thought impossible.”
“We’ve provided free childcare for two-year-olds for the first time in New York City history.
We’ve given back tens of millions of dollars to tenants who were taken advantage of by bad landlords.We’ve repaired 165,000 potholes.And we’ve done all of this while keeping crime at its lowest level in the city’s history.”
“That’s what democratic socialism looks like.
And what you’re seeing is that New Yorkers experienced this for six months and decided they want more of it on the national level.”
It’s amazing to finally have a leader with the belief and energy to help people, and also the confidence, the charm, the presence, the authority, whatever you call it, that great leaders have.
It’s sad that the idea of Mamdani being the face of the Democratic Party is controversial at all.
What’s controversial about free childcare, other than the threat to corporate profits?
What’s controversial about returning money to tenants who were wronged by bad landlords, other than the threat to corporate profits?
For far too long, right-wing economic and political ideas have been seen as normal, and for far too long, Democrats have given in and accepted that as the standard.
That time is over.
Mamdani is leading the way for a new Democratic Party that wins elections by promising and delivering real results for working families.
He’s showing America that things don’t have to be this bad, and in fact, a lot can be fixed right away if you have the courage to do so.
So let them hate.
We’re coming for Trump and every corrupt, pedo-protecting Republican out there.
