Barack Obama took one hilarious shot at Donald Trump’s extravagant White House makeover on Saturday. By early Sunday morning, Trump was firing back with a lengthy attack that went far beyond the former president’s decorating joke.
The exchange began at a Democratic campaign rally in Cleveland, Ohio, where Obama was supporting gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton and Senate candidate Sherrod Brown.
Obama mocked Trump’s preoccupation with renovating the White House, from the massive ballroom project to the paved-over Rose Garden and the president’s unmistakable fondness for gold.
“He should be on HGTV,” Obama joked.
Then came the line that stole the show.
“He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.”
The audience laughed as Obama used the comparison to make a broader argument: While Americans struggle with living costs, the president appears unusually focused on expensive renovations and personal spectacle.
Trump apparently had plenty to say about Obama afterward.
In a Truth Social post published early Sunday, the president launched into an attack on Obama’s record, his political endorsements and the Democratic candidates he is supporting in the midterm elections.
“Obama was a grossly incompetent President!” Trump declared.
He accused Obama of giving Iran billions of dollars and a path toward nuclear weapons, reviving a familiar attack on the nuclear agreement negotiated during Obama’s presidency.
The 2015 agreement provided sanctions relief in exchange for restrictions and international monitoring of Iran’s nuclear program. Trump’s description of it as simply giving Iran a route to a bomb is a disputed political characterization, not an established fact.
But Trump wasn’t finished.
He revisited the 2016 presidential election, reminding readers that Obama had campaigned for Hillary Clinton before her defeat.
Then he jumped to 2024, noting that Obama had also campaigned for Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump.
From there, the president turned his attention to Michigan, where Obama had appeared at another Democratic rally Saturday.
His target was Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate candidate challenging Republican Mike Rogers.
Trump called El-Sayed a “Muslim Brotherhood Jihadist” and accused him of harboring hatred toward Jews, Black Americans and the country.
He provided no evidence supporting those inflammatory allegations.
The president also branded El-Sayed a “Fake Doctor” and attacked his record in public health.
But El-Sayed is a physician and former executive director of the Detroit Health Department. Trump’s insult did not change his medical credentials.
The attack was especially striking because Obama had defended El-Sayed at the Michigan rally against rhetoric targeting his Muslim identity.
Obama compared those attacks to the false conspiracy theories about his own background that circulated during his political career.
“We have seen this movie before. I starred in it,” Obama told the crowd.
Trump’s response continued with claims about restoring Michigan’s automobile industry, an Air Force base and employment, before ending with a campaign appeal for Rogers.
“VOTE FOR MIKE ROGERS! He will never let you down!”
What Trump did not do was directly address Obama’s Cheesecake Factory comparison.
The Truth Social post contained no rebuttal of the joke itself. Nor did Trump offer a defense of the particular decorating choices Obama had mocked.
Instead, he turned the conversation toward Iran, two past presidential elections and the current Michigan Senate race.
The timing makes the exchange a striking political spectacle, although Trump’s post does not explicitly say the decorating joke prompted it.
For Democrats, the episode offers a contrast between Obama’s campaign-trail humor and Trump’s combative response.
For Republicans, Trump’s message was an effort to challenge Obama’s record and undermine the candidates he is supporting just days before the November 3 midterms.
But the sequence remains hard to miss.
Obama joked that Trump’s White House resembled something Saddam Hussein might have built if he opened a Cheesecake Factory.
Hours later, Trump was back on Truth Social attacking his predecessor, revisiting old election victories and taking aim at a Democratic Senate candidate.
And through all of it, the Cheesecake Factory joke went unanswered.
