The White House strongly denied a news story from last Friday that said there was a serious threat of spying against the U.S. by Israel. But on Monday night, Vice President JD Vance seemed to go against that denial by making a clear but indirect comment.
On Friday, NBC News said the Pentagon had raised the level of threat from Israel to the highest level, called “critical,” because there were worries that Israel was increasing its spying activities on the U.S.
The White House said the report was completely false and claimed that the people who gave the information — two current U.S. officials and one former one — didn’t know anything about the situation.
However, when asked by Fox News’ Jesse Waters how concerned he was about Israel spying on the U.S., Vance didn’t deny the claim.
Instead, he said the U.S. and Israel have shared interests, but also areas where their goals are different.
“Look, obviously the Israelis and I — excuse me, the Israelis and the United States have a lot of shared interests, but we also have some situations where our interests diverge,” Vance told Waters.
“The president has been very clear that while Israel obviously has some objectives that it has, the United States’ main objective in Iran does not have a nuclear weapon, and we’ve actually created the space necessary where the president believes that we can get the long-term settlement to Iran’s nuclear deal.”
According to The New York Times, in 2021, Israeli military intelligence officers were caught placing listening devices at the headquarters of the Defense Intelligence Agency.
In 2025, they were also caught trying to put a listening device in a Secret Service car. The Guardian reported that last year, U.S. Lt. Gen. Patrick Frank called an Israeli official after finding recording devices allegedly planted in a U.S. military base.
Vance added, “Now, Israel may like that, they may not like that, but fundamentally we think this is in the best interest of the United States, so we’re going to keep on pursuing it.”
