This morning, Rep. James Comer and the House GOP tried to hold a show trial against the Southern Poverty Law Center. They did this in a bad way to try to make the SPLC look bad. The SPLC is a top organization that fights racism and exposes the KKK in America. They made up false accusations of fraud against the SPLC.
Rep. Raskin disagreed.
He said the real criminals are in the Trump administration. He started by talking about Trump University, which was a scam. Thousands of people were cheated out of money. They had no real classes, no professors, no campus, and they promised a lot of things they couldn’t deliver. Victims sued and got a $25 million settlement. Some people who worked there said it targeted the elderly and uneducated.
He said that the SPLC’s donors didn’t act like this.
They kept supporting the SPLC. Donations to the SPLC actually went up after the Trump administration started this fake investigation.
He wasn’t finished.
He went on to say that Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche wants to create a $1.776 billion taxpayer-funded slush fund to give money to the people who were involved in the January 6 riot.
Blanche also signed a super pardon that gives Trump, his family, and their businesses complete protection from any legal action.
He also fired prosecutors and FBI agents who worked on the January 6 investigation.
Now, people like Jared Wise, who encouraged people to attack police on January 6, and Ed Martin, who defended violent attackers, have important jobs in the DOJ.
Trump even nominated someone with a history of being friendly with neo-Nazis to watch over ethics in the special counsel’s office.
Rep. Raskin said that the attack on the SPLC is part of a bigger effort to harm the civil rights movement.
It’s a fake prosecution that is meant to punish the good and let the guilty go free. Many judges have called the Trump administration’s actions misleading, even false.
He said that soon another judge will probably call this whole thing a fraud.
He is sad that the House Judiciary Committee now helps this fraud.
He said from the start, there was nothing real behind the Trump administration’s attack on the SPLC.
It was all about making the civil rights defenders look bad.
It is very embarrassing to see the House Judiciary Committee do such fake shows just to help the Republican Party’s white supremacist goals.
