An excerpt from the upcoming book by Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, published by the Daily Mail, revealed that White House workers had to watch President Donald Trump’s trash. It was found that he sometimes threw away valuable White House items, like sterling silver utensils, along with regular trash.
This excerpt is from Swan and Haberman’s new book, *Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump*, which covers the first 14 months of Trump’s first term.
The book describes how staff who took care of the president’s private rooms faced many unusual cleaning problems.
They wrote that Trump was a nighttime snacker who often left empty potato chip bags, Starbucks wrappers, and ice cream containers in the trash or on the floor.
This habit led to more careful checking of the trash after staff noticed that valuable White House items were disappearing with the food waste.
Haberman and Swan added, “The staff had to begin monitoring the trash after it was discovered he was sometimes throwing out White House sterling silver utensils.”
In another part of the Daily Mail article, the authors talk about Trump’s strong interest in redecorating his private space, sometimes clashing with First Lady Melania Trump.
They also mention worries about a bathroom that was covered in carpet and needed constant attention.
They wrote that once, when staff reminded Trump that he was taking items from the Center Hall that Melania had picked out, he showed no concern.
It seemed like he was trying to outdo her, making sure his room was better than hers.
The reporters also noted that Trump’s redecorating caused a lot of work, and staff often felt caught between the two of them.
They were the only presidential couple to use and keep separate bedrooms regularly since the Nixon era.
Regarding the carpeted bathroom, the authors wrote, “The area near the shower would often get soaked; staff never knew why, but they worried about mold growing underneath.”
