Donald Trump is furious that his own Justice Department told the truth. So furious, according to CNN, that he’s now considering firing Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for Washington D.C. and one of his longest-standing allies, simply because her office did its job.
Pirro’s office filed a court document admitting that damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool wasn’t vandalism at all — it stemmed from Trump’s own “hasty and botched” $14 million renovation. As a result, her office dropped the felony charges against former Olympian David Hearn, a man who had been wrongly accused and indicted for something he never did.
Trump’s reaction wasn’t gratitude that an innocent man was spared prosecution. It was rage. “I think she choked,” he told reporters. “I was disappointed in Jeanine Pirro. Really disappointed… She folded like an umbrella.” Sources say Trump was “blindsided” by the filing and spent the entire weekend fuming, with one source telling CNN it’s now “highly likely she’s removed from her job.”
This is justice through the looking glass. Trump isn’t threatening to fire Pirro for incompetence or misconduct. He’s threatening to fire her for correcting a wrongful prosecution his own administration pursued in the first place.
And the truth is damning. Internal communications obtained through FOIA requests, spanning March through last month, show National Park Service officials discussing the need to drain the pool because of algae — not vandalism — as early as July 1st.
There’s no mention of sabotage anywhere in the record. The vandalism story appears to have been invented to cover for a botched renovation, and an innocent man’s life and freedom were nearly destroyed to sustain that lie.
Meanwhile, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, whose department oversaw the shoddy project and allegedly withheld key information from prosecutors, faces zero consequences and remains firmly in Trump’s good graces.
This is what loyalty means in Trump’s Washington: telling the truth gets you fired. Prosecuting an innocent man to protect the boss’s ego gets you protected.
