The Holy See’s Press Office released a statement recognizing the American Secretary of State’s visit as a way to build “good relations between the Holy See and the United States.”
The statement mentioned that discussions took place about issues in the region and around the world, especially in places where there is war, political problems, and tough humanitarian situations, as well as the importance of working hard for peace.
As expected, the tone was polite but maybe not very strong, which makes sense considering Leo’s clear dislike for the Trump administration.
However, the gift exchange during the meeting caught people’s attention.
Rubio, who says he is Catholic even though he often goes to an Evangelical mega-church, gave the Pope a crystal football with the seal of the U.S. Department of State on it.
“Wow.
Okay,” said Leo, using the most “I’m not impressed” voice you’ve ever heard.
“So… It uh… What do you get someone who has everything?”
Rubio muttered.
We can easily think of better gifts: an announcement that the administration will stop its illegal war in Iran, a promise that Cuba won’t be attacked, or a statement that migrants won’t be treated cruelly by ICE.
Those are things the Pope would really appreciate. Instead, Rubio gave him a cheap little toy.
Leo’s gift was more meaningful.
He gave Rubio an olive-wood pen, explaining that it is “of course, the plant of peace.”
The message was clear.
This Pope will never stop calling for peace, even if Trump increases his attacks and negative comments. Leo stays focused on saving lives and promoting the real teachings of Jesus Christ.
The world will always have people like Marco Rubio, men willing to go through innocent blood to gain even a little power.
We aren’t always lucky enough to have people like Leo, and we should be thankful to live at the same time as him.
