The accusations are serious and if any of them were considered alone, it would mean that Hegseth should be removed from his position right away. When all of them are looked at together, they show that the “Secretary of War” is completely criminal, out of control, and a real threat to the safety of Americans. The impeachment process was started by Representative Yassamin Ansari, who is the first Iranian-American ever elected to Congress.
The articles are:
1 ) “Unauthorized war against Iran and reckless endangerment of United States service members”
2 ) “Violations of the Law of Armed Conflict and targeting of civilians”
3) “Negligence and Reckless handling of sensitive military information”
4 ) “Obstruction of Congressional Oversight”
5) “Conduct bringing disrepute upon the United States and its armed forces”
1 and 2 outline Hegseth’s inexcusable behavior in starting this pointless, illegal Iran War for Donald Trump, and specifically reference the horrific bombing of a school in Minab, Iran that killed 156 people. 2 also mentions his murderous strikes on boats in the Caribbean that were supposedly carrying drugs from Venezuela.
3 focuses on SignalGate, the stunning lapse in digital security that dominated the headlines during the early days of Hegseth’s tenure but which gradually faded as more, even more egregious incidents accumulated.
4 accuses Hegseth of failing to “provide timely and complete information regarding military operations” to Congress and of “withholding material facts relating to civilian casualties and operational conduct in Iran, Venezuela, and other military theaters.”
5 goes into Hegseth’s fixation on deranged partisan policies like “anti-DEI” initiatives, his attacks on affirmative action, targeting of transgender service members, and his Kremlin-tinged criticisms of NATO.
Even though this impeachment attempt is unlikely to succeed because Congress is controlled by Republicans, previous efforts to impeach Kristi Noem and Pam Bondi led to Trump firing both of them.
Putting pressure on Hegseth might have a similar effect.
At the very least, these impeachment charges set the stage for when Democrats take back the House and Senate in the midterms.
Then we can use subpoenas and work hard to remove him.
The impeachment articles are also supported by Representatives Steve Cohen, Jasmine Crockett, Sarah McBride, David Min, Brittany Pettersen, Shri Thanedar, and Nikema Williams.
