The plaintiff, the United States, claims harm based on a number of vague and uncertain issues, including what might happen if the State of Hawaii successfully wins a state lawsuit against fossil fuel companies. This was stated by Hawaii’s Senior U.S. District Judge Helen Gillmor.
The lawsuit that was rejected was filed by the Justice Department in April of last year, just two days after Hawaii announced its plan to sue fossil fuel companies.
One day after the DOJ filed its case, Hawaii sued several companies, including BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Shell, for selling products that they knew would harm the climate by increasing warming.
The Trump administration tried to argue that helping fossil fuel companies is good for the country.
But in reality, we know that it’s only good for big corporate profits. Like everything else this president did, it was an attempt to benefit the wealthy and powerful.
The federal government said, “At a time when states should be helping to find reliable energy sources within the country, Hawaii is blocking progress.”
Thankfully, Judge Gilmor saw through the lies from the MAGA movement.
This lawsuit was clearly an attempt by the White House to reward Big Oil companies for the large donations they made to Trump’s campaign. Judge Gilmor dismissed the government’s case with prejudice.
