The Speaker of the House, who has done almost nothing since pushing through Trump’s big tax cut bill that mainly helped rich people, is running out of patience with the extreme-right members of his party.These members, including far-right groups like the Freedom Caucus, keep blocking important legislation.Time and again, the Republican Party’s own plans have been stopped by their own lawmakers, who get upset about silly things like spending public money on public services or adding strict voter ID rules to a bill about insider trading.
Once again, Speaker Mike Johnson had to pull a major piece of legislation—a bipartisan veterans bill—because of a group of Republicans, including Freedom Caucus member Anna Paulina Luna, who refused to support it.
According to NOTUS, Johnson lost his temper and shouted, “I’m sick of this sh*t!” He quickly apologized to Luna, knelt down to apologize to a child who saw the argument, and then left the room in frustration, ending the bill in defeat once more.
Other Republicans share Johnson’s frustration with these radical members who keep hurting their party.
Rep.Don Bacon, who is leaving Congress, said, “It creates anger and resentment.We want to get things done, and dysfunction isn’t good.” Rep.Tim Burchett said, “It’s the hardcore conservatives against everybody else.” He added, “Matt Gaetz told me, I remember, he said, ‘We’ll have more power if we don’t have a supermajority; it gives us more opportunity because if we did, we’d just get run over,’” referring to the former House leader who often clashed with top Republicans.
Johnson has spent most of his time in the House trying to please these extreme-right members, and now he’s in a tough spot.
You made the mess, now deal with it.It’s truly satisfying to see how chaotic and broken the Republican group has become.We hope the stress of it makes Johnson’s hair turn gray and gives him a stomach ulcer, because everything he has managed to get done has been a disaster for the American people.
