Kaitlan Collins went to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner to get an award for her reporting.
Of course, Donald Trump couldn’t let her be alone.
He told the award-winning CNN reporter she should “smile” because she was “a young, attractive woman” and then compared her to transgender actor Dylan Mulvaney.The comment got nothing but silence.
Trump started by saying, “I want to personally congratulate CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on receiving her award.” He then said, “It was all about me.
It was fake, she shouldn’t get the award, it was fake.”
He then turned to Collins directly.
“But she’s a young, attractive woman,” Trump said.
“She never smiles.I said, ‘Kaitlan, do you ever smile?Smile!’ You have a nice position.You’re at CNN fake news.You should be a happy person.So smile, Kaitlan!Just smile.”
Trump went on to compare Collins to Mulvaney, joking that he thought she had “a major new sponsorship” before realizing “it wasn’t her on the Bud Light can.”
The line got no laughs, no groans — just dead silence.
Collins was at the dinner because the White House Correspondents’ Association had honored her reporting on Volodymyr Zelensky’s controversial Oval Office meeting with Trump.
By the end of the president’s speech, she had become one of the night’s biggest targets.
As she left the dinner, Collins was approached by a reporter outside the venue after Trump’s remarks put her in the spotlight again.
As a professional, she refused to comment.
For years, Trump has often singled Collins out during press conferences and public events.
On Friday night, on journalism’s biggest night in Washington, he did it again.
We like Collins here at OD because she keeps her head up in the face of terrible attacks from the supposed leader of the free world and keeps asking tough questions.
