What you usually hear from racist right-wing groups is that Democratic cities are dangerous places where people can be killed in the middle of the day. But the truth is quite different.
Under Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s leadership, which focuses on solving the real causes of crime, New York City is now experiencing the lowest number of murders and shootings in its history.
Crime has gone down by 10.6% across the city, burglary is at its lowest level ever, and retail theft has dropped by 25%.
It seems that focusing on problems like poverty, homelessness, and keeping young people busy – and also making sure the NYPD does its job by adding 2,600 more officers to high-risk areas, while also reducing violence by setting up a new Community Safety Office to send mental health workers instead of armed police – is much more effective at stopping crime than just locking people up.
It’s almost as if Republicans want to create an excuse to jail Black people so that taxpayer money can go to their private prison business friends.
