Caroline Sunshine, the deputy communications director for President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, said that former Attorney General Pam Bondi helped make it harder for acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to get confirmed.
Sunshine talked about this on Thursday’s episode of CNN’s NewsNight.
She discussed Bondi’s recent interview with the House Oversight Committee, where Bondi was questioned about how she handled the release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. Even though Bondi said she didn’t blame Blanche for most of the Justice Department’s mistakes in the Epstein case, the transcript of her interview shows a different picture.
Bondi said Blanche was in charge of the whole process.
She told the committee that Blanche was leading the Epstein investigation and the release of all the documents from the start. She also said that Blanche knew the most about answering questions about Epstein.
On Wednesday, Trump announced that he would nominate Blanche for the permanent position of Attorney General.
But not everyone in his own party is happy about it. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said it’s hard to say if he’ll support the nomination. Senator Thom Tillis said Blanche would need to condemn the people who attacked police during the Jan. 6 insurrection, or else he wouldn’t vote for her.
Sunshine pointed out that Blanche might have a tough time getting confirmed, and she blamed Bondi for making that happen.
She said:
I think Pam Bondi has absolutely laid the groundwork for Todd Blanche to have a difficult confirmation. And I think she used her time in that closed door session, where she was under sworn– under oath in front of Congress as the former Attorney General and as Todd Blanchett’s former boss, to say, “He ran the whole process, and he was in charge of the whole release. And the Dow’s at 50,000.” Right? And so she’s now laid the groundwork for that to be a confirmation where Democrats can essentially have a layup and say, “There’s no way I could vote for this guy. I can’t. This is about women. This is about protecting.” Because, like you said, other people have noticed this has been a politically toxic issue for the president.
