Former President Bill Clinton delivered a biting joke about Donald Trump’s redesign of the White House, comparing one of its most prominent outdoor spaces to something considerably less presidential.
Speaking at a Democratic campaign event in Hollywood, Florida, on October 20, Clinton criticized the changes Trump has made to the historic property, particularly the transformation of the Rose Garden.
And he didn’t hold back.
“I think Congress made a mistake not protesting turning the Rose Garden into what looks like the entrance to Liberace’s bathroom,” Clinton told the audience.
The remark drew on the famously extravagant style of Liberace, the late American entertainer known for his elaborate costumes, lavish interiors and over-the-top decoration.
It was a pointed comparison aimed at Trump’s taste for luxury and ornamentation.
The Rose Garden, long associated with presidential announcements, diplomatic ceremonies and historic White House events, has undergone significant changes during Trump’s presidency.
The administration has defended the redesign as a practical improvement intended to accommodate official functions and reduce maintenance problems.
Critics, however, argue that the changes have diminished the historic character of one of the White House’s best-known spaces.
Clinton clearly belongs to the latter camp.
Rather than deliver a lengthy architectural critique, the former president condensed his disapproval into a single joke that captured the contrast between traditional White House landscaping and Trump’s more extravagant aesthetic.
The remarks came as Clinton campaigned for Democrat David Jolly in Florida’s gubernatorial race.
Although the comments were made Tuesday, footage circulated more widely after Fox News aired the exchange, drawing renewed attention to Clinton’s criticism.
The moment was particularly striking because Clinton was criticizing a space he knew firsthand.
As president from 1993 to 2001, he spent eight years living and working at the White House, where the Rose Garden served as a familiar backdrop for official events.
His criticism therefore carried a different weight from that of an ordinary political commentator.
Clinton wasn’t merely mocking a design choice. He was questioning how a sitting president had altered a nationally significant property.
Trump has repeatedly defended his approach to renovating and decorating the White House, portraying the changes as improvements to the presidential residence.
But Clinton’s remark offered a sharply different interpretation.
And with one reference to Liberace’s bathroom, he turned a debate about presidential aesthetics into a political punchline.
The comparison may not settle the argument over Trump’s renovations, but it certainly gave critics of the makeover a memorable line to repeat.

Donald J. Trump is trying to copy the looks of his hero’s the saudi’s. by painting and showing everything in his crazy sights are gold.
Donald Trump doesn’t have good taste.only wanting ot be something Trump will never be, because Trump is a loser and a fake.also a clown.
