Donald Trump’s big Thursday speech mostly talked about problems with election security, but a new look at his speech shows he also gave away that he and his party are in trouble before the midterms.
During his late-night speech, Trump said China had access to data on over 200 million American voters and that Homeland Security found 250,000 non-citizens registered to vote in the U.S.
But experts say the Trump team hasn’t provided clear proof for these claims.
Even though the speech didn’t change much about his false stories about voter fraud, it showed that Trump “knows he’s losing,” according to Brian Tyler Cohen from The Bulwark.
“Certainly, there’s a silver lining here.
If Trump was in a strong position, he wouldn’t need to talk about old election conspiracies that don’t really matter to most people,” Cohen wrote.
“But he’s not in a strong position, and Americans know it.
He knows it.The problem Republicans have is they don’t have any Democrats to blame for the issues.”
Although Republicans are facing a tough time in the midterms with Trump’s approval ratings at a historic low, Cohen still told people to stay watchful of the administration’s moves to control the election process.
Still, Cohen said Trump’s focus on baseless election security claims shows he knows how weak his party’s position really is.
“Trump doesn’t have Democrats to blame for rising costs, high inflation, a new war in the Middle East, missing Epstein files, high gas prices, and a government focused on making sure Dear Leader looks good rather than helping people with lower prices,” Cohen wrote.
“Trump wouldn’t need to talk about election denialism if he were winning; he does it because he knows he’s not.”
