Just when you thought you couldn’t like him any more…
The first American Pope said, “I want to sincerely congratulate all Americans on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.” He called this semiquincentennial a key moment in American history, on July 4, 1776, when the nation declared its belief in liberty, equality, the pursuit of happiness, justice, and self-government through democratic rule.
Unfortunately, these ideals are being challenged by Donald Trump, who has made the Pope one of his main opponents on the global stage.
Leo has spoken out against Trump’s harsh treatment of immigrants and his illegal war against Iran.Despite Trump’s attacks, Leo has stayed strong and not backed down.
The Pope continued, “For over two and a half centuries, Americans have worked together to keep these principles alive—through sacrifice, service, innovation, and taking part in civic life.” He said this anniversary is a chance not only to celebrate the nation’s progress but also to think about the duties Americans have toward each other and the future generations who will live in the country as it continues to develop.
He also praised America’s tradition of religious freedom, another value being attacked by the MAGA movement, which wants to create a fascist Evangelical theocracy.
However, it was the part about immigrants that really upset the Republicans.
Leo said, “Protecting human life also means helping immigrants, whose hopes, efforts, and contributions have been part of this country’s history from the start.” He added, “In every generation, people who came seeking freedom, opportunity, and a place to belong have helped shape the nation’s character.
Welcoming them with kindness and generosity is not only a good deed, but it also acknowledges the dignity of every human being.”
This message of inclusion contrasts sharply with the hate and negativity coming from the White House.
Conservatives have been upset all week about the Supreme Court’s decision to support birthright citizenship.Tomorrow, Trump will give a Fourth of July speech that will be biased, self-centered, bigoted, and ignore the lasting ideals that guided the Founding Fathers.
When it comes to leading America, Pope Leo truly outshines Donald Trump every time.
