Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was interrupted during a hearing and told to stop talking about his speech on how the Trump administration is handling the war with Iran.
On Tuesday, Hegseth was testifying before the Senate Appropriations Committee about the military campaign against Iran and the administration’s request for extra funding.
During the hearing, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) asked Hegseth, “At what point do you stop asking Americans to pay for a war they don’t support?
Especially with an already high budget?”
Hegseth replied, “I obviously don’t agree with your description of the war.”
Shaheen responded, “I understand that, but I want you to answer my question.
I know you don’t agree with my view, and I don’t agree with yours either.”
Hegseth started to answer, but then paused as he tried to explain his stance on the Iran war and why he disagreed with Shaheen’s description.
He said, “I understand the importance of winning a war, but I’m here in front of a committee that wants to talk about a war that’s been going on for years.
And we’re talking about strategic defeat in a conflict that has been going on for four months to stop Iran from getting a nuclear bomb.”
Hegseth added, “I hope people in this town have some perspective on what President Trump is doing,” and asked, “Do you want radical Islamists to have a nuclear bomb?”
Shaheen then cut him off.
