Former Rep.Marjorie Taylor Greene claimed Elaine Chao, the wife of Sen.Mitch McConnell from Kentucky, is “a Chinese spy.” She made this accusation because Chao went to China while her husband was in the hospital.
Sen.McConnell, who is 84 years old, was found unconscious at his home on June 14, possibly due to a heart issue. He is still in the hospital, and his team hasn’t explained why he was hospitalized. This happened just two days after Chao, a former U.S.Transportation secretary and Labor secretary, traveled to China.
A spokesperson for Chao said in a statement that she was on a planned trip to China to help with family charity work.
“During the trip, she met with several people, including the U.S.ambassador,” the spokesperson said.”The senator’s health did not require her to come back right away.”
The spokesperson also mentioned that Chao has since returned to the U.S., but there was no information about whether she has spoken to her husband.
On Tuesday, Greene posted on X, criticizing Chao, who was born in Taiwan to Chinese parents.
She accused her of being “like” a spy for China.
“Elaine Chao, who is likely a Chinese spy married to Mitch McConnell, has been in China almost the entire time the nearly dead Senator has been in the hospital.
And she met with China’s VP,” Greene wrote.”Now that she’s back, they are running a PR campaign.Sure totally normal.”
On Tuesday, CNN commentator Scott Jennings, a longtime friend of McConnell, said the senator called him that morning and they talked for almost 20 minutes.
Chao worked as Transportation secretary under former President George W.
Bush and as Labor secretary during President Donald Trump’s first term. After his first term, Trump often mocked Chao, calling her “Coco Chow.”
McConnell, who was once the Senate majority leader, is not running for re-election this year.
