The Kennedy Center warned about a big financial problem, possibly in the “hundreds of millions,” after a court order said President Donald Trump’s name should be removed from its foundation.
On June 29, the center filed a court document asking for a temporary pause to stop the judge’s order.
They said the financial damage would be so severe that it might never be fixed, which would hurt future construction plans, according to Forbes.
The foundation’s rules say donations must be returned if Trump’s name is taken off.
The filing also said some donors only gave money because the center had Trump’s name on it.
The Kennedy Center has gotten $258 million from Congress and hundreds of millions from private donors.
It is asking for a short delay while it appeals the case to the U.S.Court of Appeals for the D.C.Circuit.
In their filing, the center’s lawyers suggested that Trump’s construction skills could help restore the building to its former look, as long as the donations aren’t lost.
The fight over the Kennedy Center’s name is getting bigger.
This happened after a federal appeals court refused to delay a deadline to remove Trump’s name, saying only Congress can approve a renaming.

The Trump-appointed board’s 2025 decision to rename the venue caused a lot of criticism, leading to canceled events, broken partnerships, and the recent dismissal of a $1 million lawsuit against jazz drummer Chuck Redd.
Since June 13, large tarps have covered the Kennedy Center sign after Trump’s name was removed.
The center says the tarps are for repairing the marble facade, but no timeline has been given for when they’ll come off.The move has upset Democrats, including Rep.Joyce Beatty, who filed a lawsuit challenging the addition of Trump’s name.
Trump has made beautification projects in Washington, D.C., a priority for his second term.
