California’s Governor Gavin Newsom criticized Donald Trump after Trump’s prime-time speech at the White House last night.Newsom said the speech showed a president who is out of touch with reality.Trump almost spent half an hour talking about false claims about the 2020 election, foreign interference, and what he called “shocking weaknesses” in the US voting system.Newsom wasn’t happy with that.
In a video posted after the speech, Newsom said, “The only thing missing tonight in Donald Trump’s speech was tin foil.” He also said, “This was a legitimate 25th Amendment moment,” and called Trump’s speech “the ramblings of a mad king.”
The 25th Amendment is about removing a president who can’t do their job.
While it’s very unlikely that Trump’s vice president or Cabinet would use it, Newsom made a point: Trump’s speech raised serious questions about whether he is fit for the job.
Although Newsom agreed that foreign interference in elections is a real issue, he rejected Trump’s effort to bring up the 2020 election again, which he lost six years ago.
Newsom said, “He knows he’s going to lose [the midterms], and he needs to rig the election before one vote is cast. That’s what that whole thing was about tonight.”
Other lawmakers also shared Newsom’s worry.
Arizona’s Democratic Representative Yassamin Ansari also mentioned the 25th Amendment, writing, “How can anyone deny the urgency of the 25th Amendment at this point?”
What’s surprising isn’t just that Trump still can’t move on from his 2020 loss—it’s that he used one of the most powerful platforms in the world, a White House speech to the nation, to do it and show the world that he’s as crazy as a loon.
