While Trump and his administration continue to push against democracy, the opposition is achieving significant victories, and veteran journalist Scott Dworkin is ensuring we notice every one of them. Here are eight successes from just the last week that show the battle against Trumpism is ongoing and that Democrats are making progress:
1.
Senate referee blocks Trump’s billion-dollar scheme – Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough decided that Republicans broke the rules by trying to sneak $1 billion, including $220 million for Trump’s new ballroom/bunker, into a Secret Service bill. Trump reportedly wanted her fired, but she remains in her position. Trump lost his billion.
2.
Two Jan. 6 officers sue to stop Trump’s $1.8 billion fund – Capitol Police officers Daniel Hodges and Harry Dunn are working to prevent taxpayer money from being used to pay off the rioters who assaulted them. Their lead lawyer is the Jan. 6 prosecutor who resigned over Trump’s pardons.
3.
Trump’s hidden tax protection fails – Acting AG Todd Blanche attempted to quietly state that the IRS could never investigate Trump or his businesses again. Senator Ron Wyden caught this immediately and deemed it invalid. The plan fell apart before lunchtime.
4.
Another ICE agent faces charges in Minnesota – rogue agent Christian Castro was charged with felony assault after allegedly shooting a Venezuelan immigrant through his front door and lying about it. This is the second ICE agent in Minnesota to be charged this year.
5.
Nine prosecutors form the “FAFO” coalition – district attorneys nationwide are joining forces to warn Trump’s supporters that their badges won’t shield them from intimidating voters. Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner made it very clear: mess with voters and you’ll find out what “find out” means.
6.
NAACP and Congressional Black Caucus target the South – The NAACP called for a boycott of eight Southern states known for gerrymandering by Black athletes, while the CBC helped to defeat a bill that college sports leagues wanted badly. Message received.
7.
Thousands march in Mississippi for voting rights – protesters marched past Governor Tate Reeves’s mansion after he criticized Rep. Bennie Thompson for registering Black voters. Thompson responded: “Between now and November, you better hold on.”
8.
Keisha Lance Bottoms scores a big win in Georgia – the former mayor of Atlanta won the Democratic gubernatorial primary with 57 percent of the vote. She could be the first Black woman elected governor in American history this November.
Eight victories in seven days.
Trump’s corrupt administration is loud, but the resistance is louder, and we are just getting started in thwarting Trump and making him uncomfortable time and again, until we send him away the right way – through the ballot box.
