Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) asked Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche about why Ghislaine Maxwell, a co-conspirator of Jeffrey Epstein, was moved to a minimum security prison camp.He also asked about the controversial merger between Paramount and Warner Brothers/Discovery, and the Justice Department’s investigation into it.The two had a tense exchange during Booker’s Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday.
Booker was questioning Blanche about the Epstein case and related issues.
Blanche, who was previously Trump’s personal attorney and is now being considered for the attorney general position, has come under a lot of scrutiny for how he handled the Epstein files and for ethical concerns raised by lawmakers.
Booker said, “Just one week after your meeting, Ghislaine Maxwell was transferred from a low security federal facility to a minimum security camp.
Were you involved in that move?”
Blanche replied, “We found out she was getting threats.”
Booker challenged that.
“If someone is in danger in a prison, they’re put in solitary or protective custody. They don’t get moved to a camp,” he said.
Blanche responded, “That’s not always true.”
Booker then shifted the discussion to the Paramount and Warner Brothers/Discovery merger and the DOJ’s investigation into it.
He asked, “Did the career attorneys who looked into that deal suggest ending the investigation?”
Blanche started to answer, but Booker interrupted him.
“You’re not letting me answer, man!” Blanche said.
“I didn’t ask you that.
I asked if the career investigators recommended closing the case,” Booker said.
Blanche replied, “I don’t know.”
Booker: You approved the decision to close the department's investigation into that merger of Paramount and Warner Brothers/Discovery. Yes or no?
