Legendary singer Pat Boone has supported Donald Trump for years.
Now, at 92, the lifelong Republican has decided it’s time to give the president some advice.
And he isn’t exactly being subtle about it.
Boone released a roughly two-minute video Friday addressing Trump directly and explaining that he believes the president needs to change the way he communicates.
His central recommendation could hardly have been simpler.
Be quiet.
“So may I recommend something very highly — that you be quiet,” Boone told Trump.
The criticism is notable because Boone isn’t speaking as a longtime Trump opponent.
Quite the opposite.
Boone endorsed Trump during his first presidential campaign in 2016 and has remained supportive of him over the years.
He even recorded campaign robocalls on Trump’s behalf.
That’s why Boone framed his new message not as an attack, but as advice from someone who considers himself a friend.
“Mr. President, I say this as a friend,” Boone said.
“For just a little while, try being quiet. You may be surprised how loudly that silence speaks.”
Boone said he believes Trump is under enormous pressure and suggested that it is beginning to show.
“I think you’re very tired,” Boone told him.
“And I think you’re feeling the pressure and expressing yourself in ways that are not becoming to you.”
Then Boone delivered his assessment:
“They’re not presidential.”
The singer urged Trump to stop repeatedly telling people about his own accomplishments and instead allow Americans to judge those accomplishments for themselves.
“Quit talking” about the things he wants people to admire about him, Boone advised, and “let them discover those things for themselves.”
But Boone wasn’t finished.
He also returned to a piece of advice he said he had previously given Trump about the president’s treatment of women and his habit of insulting people.
“Please be polite to women and quit calling names,” Boone said.
Boone described Trump’s name-calling during political debates as “childish” and pointed to former Republican President Ronald Reagan as an example of how a president can use humor without abandoning courtesy or respect.
Then came perhaps Boone’s most unusual suggestion.
He proposed that the news media simply stop covering Trump for a couple of days.
No constant press conferences.
No reporters waiting for the president’s next comment.
No nonstop attention surrounding whatever Trump might say next.
Boone suggested that Trump experience what he called “the deafening roar of silence.”
His theory was that temporarily removing the constant spotlight might encourage the president to reconsider the way he communicates.
Boone argued that behaving in a more “polite and respectful” way could ultimately result in better coverage and more public support.
“Sometimes the strongest thing a leader can do is say less, listen more, and let his actions speak for themselves,” Boone said.
It was an extraordinary message coming from someone with Boone’s political history.
The singer has been associated with conservative politics for decades.
He backed Trump in 2016 and has repeatedly defended his support for Republican candidates and causes.
That history makes his latest comments considerably different from the endless criticism Trump receives from Democrats, progressive celebrities or longtime political opponents.
Boone is criticizing someone he supported.
And he repeatedly made clear that he wanted Trump to understand the message that way.
He wasn’t asking the president to abandon his agenda.
He wasn’t announcing that he had become a Democrat.
He was telling Trump that, in his view, the president’s own behavior and constant public commentary were becoming a problem.
At 92 years old, Boone apparently decided there was no reason to dance around the point.
His closing advice was as simple as the rest of his message.
“I say this as a friend.”
“Just be quiet.”
