“The Trump-controlled Kennedy Center attempted to stop opposition to its illegal name change by filing a weak lawsuit against jazz musician Chuck Redd,” said Redd’s attorney, Lisa Banks.
“The court properly dismissed that breach of contract lawsuit, finding there was no contract and no real harm, and the lawsuit was brought against Mr.
Redd because of his protected protest,” she added.
The Center, whose board is currently filled with Trump supporters, sued Redd after he canceled an appearance because the board had voted to put President Trump’s name on the center.
Trump is a criminal, authoritarian, and pedophilic leader.
Redd correctly called the name change illegal, and another judge later agreed.
Trump’s name has since been removed.
Redd’s decision to cancel his appearance at the annual Christmas Eve Jazz Jam was a strong act of protest because he had hosted the event for twenty years.
In their lawsuit filed in March 2026, the Center claimed Redd broke a contract and accused him of using the public forum provided by the Center to make a political statement and of not giving the public the concert he promised.
D.C.Judge Tanya M.Jones Bosier dismissed the case because Redd never signed a contract for the holiday concert.
You can’t break a contract you never signed.
Judge Bosier has now ordered the Center to pay Redd $252,479.70 for his legal fees and other costs.
They have just 45 days to pay up.
Banks called the order “appropriate” and said that “no citizen should have to spend time and money fighting baseless and politically motivated lawsuits brought by the Trump Administration.”
