CNN host Erin Burnett closely examined President Donald Trump’s changing statements about the conflict with Iran. She showed a quick video clip of Trump’s repeated claims that the U.S.military had already been destroyed before asking why the country is now increasing its military actions.
Burnett started her show by talking about the latest development after Trump said the U.S.
would strike Iran for the third night in a row and claimed the U.S.was “taking over” the Strait of Hormuz. She then showed a White House briefing that listed many military targets.
“According to the White House, the U.S.
is targeting missile launch sites, air defenses, military ships, support bases, and command centers. That’s a long list,” Burnett said.
“And it brings up a big question.
Isn’t this exactly what Trump has said over and over again was already done during his 136-day war? After all, he has claimed all these things were destroyed or badly damaged by the U.S.”
CNN then showed a clip of Trump repeatedly saying Iran’s military had been “eviscerated” or destroyed.
Burnett also challenged Trump’s description of Iran’s current military capability.
“That is not true,” she said.
“Looking at the basic numbers, we know Iran still has about 70 percent of its missile stockpile from before the war and 70 percent of its launchers.Even though Trump said they had cut the number of launchers by 90 percent.”
She pointed out that Iran claimed it had attacked a “hostile U.S.
vessel with cruise missiles today,” calling the situation a “big escalation.”
Burnett also raised questions about Trump’s sudden decision to say the U.S.
would control the Strait of Hormuz.
“All of this is a big escalation,” she said.
“And it comes as Trump says the U.S.is about to take over the Strait of Hormuz, which is strange, because if it were easy to do, the U.S.would have done it a long time ago, given the global economic impact.”
