During today’s terrible speech at the World Economic Forum, 79-year-old Donald Trump confused Iceland and Greenland at least three times while making strong claims that America should get one of those islands.
He did this because his mind is like a messy mix of old burger grease.
But if you ask his spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, he didn’t mix them up at all, because he was saying “ice land,” not “Iceland!”
“No he didn’t, Libby.
His written remarks referred to Greenland as a ‘piece of ice’ because that’s what it is. You’re the only one mixing anything up here!” wrote Leavitt on Twitter in response to a reporter pointing out what Trump had said.
Except that…he didn’t actually say that.
“I’m helping NATO, and until the last few days when I told them about Iceland, they loved me.
They called me daddy. A very smart man said he’s our daddy … our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland. So Iceland already cost us a lot of money,” is what Trump said.
He’s clearly talking about Iceland, the country, not to be confused with Greenland, the country.
While we can blame Erik the Red for the contradiction that Iceland is green and Greenland is icy, Donald Trump was clearly not saying “piece of ice.”
He was saying “Iceland.”
While this is a fairly small thing to argue over, it shows that the Trump administration is so determined to control the narrative that we ignore what we see and hear in favor of their made-up version of the truth.
It shows a deep sense of insecurity and a scary need to control everything.
We must not let their lies win.
