Donald Trump on Wednesday said the war with Iran will end “right after” the U.S.midterm elections in November. He believes Tehran is trying to influence the election but can’t keep fighting because of the pressure the U.S.is putting on them economically.
He told reporters before leaving for the Republican National Convention in Dallas, “I think the war will end right after the election because they can’t hold out any longer.
They’re desperate to try and affect the election.”
The war with Iran has now been going on for seven months with no clear end in sight.
On Wednesday, Iran said it attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz after the U.S.sank five Iranian oil tankers. This new fighting caused oil prices to rise sharply, with the price of Brent crude futures breaking $100 a barrel for the first time since July.
Trump’s approval ratings have dropped to a new low because voters are frustrated with the Iran war and the rising cost of living.
The midterm elections, which are set for November 3, are usually a test of how the country feels about the president.
Trump also said oil prices would drop once the war is over, but he acknowledged that talks could still happen, though he doesn’t prefer that option.
“Yes, a negotiation could possibly happen, but it’s not something we’re looking at,” Trump said.
