“Well, you know, I was a career prosecutor,” the former Special Counsel told MS NOW’s Nicolle Wallace.”I worked in the Justice Department and other prosecutors’ offices for almost 30 years. And I don’t know if your viewers know this, but I worked in Republican and Democratic administrations over and over.”
“I was the acting U.S.
Attorney in the first Trump administration in Nashville, Tennessee,” he explained.”That administration appointed me to run a war crimes tribunal for the State Department. So throughout my career, I’ve investigated cases based on facts and the law.We did this case the same way under the same standards.”
Smith has every right to defend himself on this issue.
His investigations into Trump’s criminal behavior were fair, impartial, and professional. For his efforts, he faced constant attacks from our corrupt president until he became Public Enemy Number One for a large, angry group of people. This interview is a small step in reclaiming his reputation from the false accusations.
Smith eventually charged Trump for interfering in the 2020 election and for taking classified documents to Mar-a-Lago, but the charges were dismissed, which upset many people after Trump won the election.
“And you know, the thing I think is important for your viewers to know is that these standards don’t change from one administration to the next,” Smith continued.
“In my experience, they haven’t.So, I think we’re facing an attack on the rule of law that’s different in both kind and scale than anything I’ve seen in my lifetime.”
“And one of the reasons I wanted to be here today, ahead of the 4th of July, which celebrates the country we all love, is to honor the public servants who do this work—the people I spent my career working side by side with,” said Smith.
“I loved being a prosecutor, and part of that was being around these kinds of people,” he went on.
“It really angers me to see them being attacked and treated unfairly for doing their jobs.I think it’s really important that we stand up for them and let them know there are a lot of people who support them and are with them.”
“And that’s not just the people who’ve been targeted and fired without reason for doing their jobs,” said Smith.
“It’s also the people still in the Justice Department today. There are a lot of good career prosecutors who are working under really tough conditions right now, and they’re still trying to do the right thing. These people aren’t out for themselves or looking for attention. We need to support them and celebrate them because they’re part of what makes this country great.”
It can’t be stressed enough just how much damage Trump has done to our justice system.
He’s shown that some people are above the law in this country, that presidents can commit crimes without facing consequences as long as their party controls Congress. He used the entire Justice Department to target his political enemies to such a degree that its credibility might never recover.
