Republican Senator John Cornyn said there’s going to be a big problem for Donald Trump in the midterm elections and that Trump will have two really tough years as he finishes his second term as president.
Cornyn made these comments during an interview with The New York Times after he lost his primary race to Ken Paxton, a strong supporter of Trump’s movement.
Trump had just endorsed Paxton at the last minute.
This loss was a big hit for Cornyn, who’s been a top Republican leader for a long time.
Trump, who is 79, praised Paxton by saying he’s “always been extremely loyal to me and our AMAZING MAGA MOVEMENT.”
Trump also accused Cornyn of not being loyal and said Cornyn wasn’t there for him when things were hard.
In a long interview from his office in the Capitol, Cornyn didn’t say much nice about Trump.
He joined others in Trump’s movement who are starting to criticize the president. Cornyn said Trump is hurting the Republican Party with his self-centered choices and his strict loyalty to Trump.
Cornyn told the newspaper that Trump is creating a situation that will lead to a “disaster” in the midterms and will be the “most miserable two years of his life.”
He said the next seven months will be difficult for the Republicans, as they prepare for the midterm elections, which are likely to be tough.
The GOP currently has small majorities in both the House and the Senate, which means they can’t afford to make many mistakes as the midterms get closer.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff James Blair also said the GOP is facing challenges.
Republican Rep. Nancy Mace admitted she’s not sure if Republicans will keep control of the House, pointing to arguments within the party.
Meanwhile, Trump has reportedly asked Republicans to win the midterms to stop Democrats from possibly trying to impeach him.
After losing to Paxton, Cornyn made a comment on social media about “an old, but apt fable.”
He wrote, “The dying frog asks the scorpion why it stung despite knowing the consequence, to which the scorpion replies: ‘I am sorry, but I couldn’t help myself. It’s my character.’”
