“Do you really think it’s a good idea politically when people are having a hard time paying for gas and food?” Collins asked Secretary Scott Bessent during a press conference.
Earlier today, The Washington Post reported that four current and former employees from the Treasury Department have said that Trump officials want his picture on $250 bills.
They have continuously urged the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to create designs. This would be the first time in over 150 years that a living person has been featured on American money. Federal law states that only people who have passed away can appear on our currency.
“This is the kind of thing you see in third-world dictatorships,” Collins commented.
Bessent responded, “I think it’s complicated.
Do you think we should have a celebration for the 250th anniversary?”
“Well, that’s going to happen no matter what,” Collins said plainly. “
But deciding to put the President’s face on the $250 bill is a choice.”
Bessent insisted, “No, no, it’s not just happening.
It’s being funded by private citizens, the federal government, state governments, and local governments to celebrate our country.”
“And I believe there’s nothing wrong with featuring the President of the United States, the person who was President, on the 250th anniversary bill,” Bessent added.
We strongly disagree with that.
The idea of putting a convicted felon, who has been accused of terrible crimes, on our money is completely unacceptable. This is just another desperate move by Trump to try to create a legacy for himself. He knows he might not have much time left and that he will be remembered for leaving behind a weaker America, a drained treasury, and angry citizens. He understands that we do not like him, so he is trying to grab onto a piece of immortality through our currency.
