California Governor Gavin Newsom is going directly at Donald Trump after the Supreme Court ruled his tariffs illegal — demanding that the money taken from American families be paid back to the people who actually suffered from it.
According to multiple economic analyses, Trump’s tariffs ended up costing the average American household around $1,751 through higher prices on groceries, clothing, electronics, car parts, and other everyday necessities. Yet now that courts have ruled the tariffs unconstitutional, the refunds are reportedly flowing back to corporations and importers instead of ordinary families.
“Donald Trump should return that money immediately,” Newsom said. “He has an obligation — $1,751 per family that was taxed by Donald Trump. He took hundreds of billions of dollars from working folks … for this vanity play, this illegal action.”
And that’s exactly the issue.
Trump spent years pretending foreign countries would absorb the cost of his tariffs, but businesses simply passed those costs directly onto consumers almost overnight. Americans paid more at checkout while corporations protected their profits.
Now those same corporations are reportedly receiving massive reimbursement checks, while the people who actually paid the higher prices get absolutely nothing in return.
More than 330,000 companies and roughly 53 million import shipments are expected to qualify for refunds, many with interest included. Meanwhile, working families — the ones who carried the burden the entire time — are left out completely.
This has always been the core of Trump’s economic politics: loud branding, fake toughness, and policies that ultimately benefit wealthy insiders and large corporations while ordinary people foot the bill.
The Supreme Court already ruled the tariffs illegal. At minimum, the people who were financially harmed by them should be compensated directly.
Working Americans paid the cost.
Working Americans deserve the refunds.
