Jimmy Kimmel turned President Donald Trump’s criticism about his low ratings back on him on Thursday night. He warned that, because of the president’s dropping approval numbers, both of them should “be out of the job.”
Starting his show, the comedian played a video from his wife, who woke him up to tell him that the president had doubled down on his call for Kimmel to be fired.
Earlier, Trump had posted on Truth Social, calling Kimmel “seriously unfunny” and saying he “incompetently presides over one of the Lowest Rated shows on Television.”
The president ended his post by demanding that ABC “better” fire Kimmel “soon.”
Reading out Trump’s latest attack, Kimmel joked, “Or what?”
As the audience booed the president’s post, Kimmel continued, “If incompetently presiding over not just one of but the lowest rating in history is the reason I should be fired, then we should both be out of a job!”
He added, “You’re not doing too good either!”
This latest exchange happened after a segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
last week, which parodied the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and made jokes about First Lady Melania Trump.
Following a shooting at the event, the First Lady accused Kimmel of “hateful and violent rhetoric” and asked ABC to “take a stand.”
The president has since joined her in that demand.
Kimmel responded by replaying clips of Trump’s campaign speeches where he defended free speech and opposed “cancel culture,” then added, “I’m starting to think Donald Trump might be a hypocrite.”
He also took a rare moment to praise several Republican lawmakers.
He mentioned Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), and Rep. James Comer (R-KY), saying they had “spoken out to support our First Amendment rights.”
Kimmel added, “Every one of these guys I’ve made fun of repeatedly and viciously on this show.
And you know what, not one of them has done? Pressured ABC to fire me for it.”
