Senator Susan Collins is supporting Mitch McConnell as more pressure builds on the former Senate Republican leader because he has been away from Congress for several weeks.RadarOnline.com has learned this.
Collins, a 73-year-old Republican from Maine, criticized those who are asking for more details about McConnell’s health.
She said, “Couldn’t we show some kindness?” when speaking to The New York Times.
She pointed out that McConnell has had a long career in public service and has faced health issues for a long time.
Collins said, “Mitch was the longest-serving leader in Senate history.
Couldn’t we give him some grace?He’s a survivor of childhood polio, which makes his recovery slower.But he’s always been strong and will come back.”
McConnell hasn’t been in the Senate since he was hospitalized, which has led to more questions about his health and calls for his office to give more information.
Collins also criticized Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who has been asking McConnell to prove he is physically and mentally fit to serve the people of Kentucky.
Beshear has written strong letters to both McConnell and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, asking for more openness and suggesting an investigation into McConnell’s long absence.
In a letter from The Daily Beast, Beshear said he was assuming that McConnell is able to read and respond verbally and isn’t physically or mentally incapacitated.
Beshear directly challenged McConnell, saying he should “show proof of your ability to serve, or resign.”
Collins criticized Beshear’s actions, saying the governor was using the situation for political gain.
She said, “This rush led by the governor, who must be running for president, is so unseemly and so unkind to a senator who has been such a leader for so many years.”
Collins isn’t the only Republican criticizing Beshear’s response to the situation.
Kentucky Senator Rand Paul called Beshear’s actions “a campaign ploy to look relevant.” Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno went even further, calling Beshear “a disgraceful, attention-seeking w—-.”
Despite growing concerns about McConnell’s condition, several Republicans are asking for patience and saying the veteran lawmaker will return once he has recovered.
Kansas Senator Roger Marshall said, “I respect his privacy.
He’s one of the toughest guys I’ve ever met.I didn’t even know he had polio until I met him in person.But he’ll be back.He’s making progress.”
