Newsom’s press office, which often criticizes Trump online, posted a comment on X that said: “Crude oil is now at $120/barrel and climbing. Americans are paying higher and higher prices.” He ended the post with a question that burst Trump’s hopes right then – “Why won’t President Trump open the Strait of Trump!?”
This isn’t the first time Trump has talked about renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself.
During a summit in Miami in March, Trump seemed to mix up the name on purpose. He said, “But they have to open it up. They have to open up the Strait of Trump. I mean, Hormuz.”
He then added, “Excuse me, I’m so sorry.
Such a terrible mistake. Fake News will say ‘he accidentally said.’ No. There’s no accidents with me.” Trump has a long history of putting his name on things, including hotels, golf courses, and steaks. He has continued this pattern in office by renaming places like the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after himself during his second term.

Tehran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the United States lifts its naval blockade on Iranian imports and delays talks about the country’s nuclear program.
