Over 50 members of Congress from the Democratic Party have asked to remove President Donald Trump from his position after he made a new threat against Iran.
On Tuesday morning, Trump caused worldwide worry by saying he would destroy the whole country of Iran if its government didn’t agree to a ceasefire.
He set a deadline for 8 p.m. ET and promised to increase attacks, including on important parts of the country.
This sudden warning caused a big reaction in politics.
Many leaders from different parties criticized Trump’s words. Some even claimed he was talking about committing genocide against one of the oldest civilizations in the world.
At that time, Congress was on a two-week break because it was still working on passing a funding plan for the Department of Homeland Security.
But that didn’t stop many Democrats from asking for Trump to be removed right away.
Among those speaking out were several well-known names, such as Rep. Rashida Tlaib from Michigan.
She called for Congress to use the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution to remove Trump from office, calling him a “maniac.”

It's time to invoke the 25th Amendment. This maniac should be removed from office. pic.twitter.com/Mm7iC3xqdP
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York said Trump’s threat of genocide was enough reason to remove him.
She also told everyone in his command chain to refuse to follow illegal orders.
This is a threat of genocide and merits removal from office. The President’s mental faculties are collapsing and cannot be trusted.

To every individual in the President’s chain of command: You have a duty to refuse illegal orders. That includes carrying out this threat. https://t.co/mTUddja5og
Just after 3 p.m. ET, Axios reporter Andrew Solender shared a list of Democratic members of Congress who had spoken out against Trump’s threat.
At that time, he counted at least 50 House Democrats who had asked for Trump to be impeached or removed using the 25th Amendment. Also, two Senate Democrats joined the House members in their demands.
By my count, there are now over 50 House Democrats, along with two Senate Democrats, who have called for Trump to be impeached or removed via the 25th Amendment for his post on Iran.

A few hours before Trump’s deadline, the government of Pakistan asked the U.S. to push the deadline back by two weeks to allow peace talks to continue.
Pakistan also urged Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz during that time as a sign of goodwill.
