After the U.S. Embassy released comments about a sad event in France and expressed concerns about how it affects the national conversation in our country — something we don’t allow to be used for political reasons — Ambassador Charles Kushner was asked to come to the ministry today. He didn’t show up, according to diplomatic sources who spoke to Reuters.
Because he didn’t come, Kushner has lost his direct access to French government officials.
That means he can’t do his job anymore. This kind of mistake would be a big problem for any other American president. But under Trump, this kind of thing is expected.
Kushner, who was a convicted criminal and was pardoned by Trump, got ambassador posts in France and Monaco after giving large donations to Trump’s political campaigns.
He was called in to talk to French officials after the Trump administration said a far-right French person was killed by “left-wing militants.” They claimed the French Interior Minister had confirmed that story.
In reality, Quentin Deranque, the far-right person who was killed, was attacked by several people who might have been on the left.
By making this into a political issue so quickly, the Trump administration showed the same carelessness and lack of judgment that has marked their actions at home. This only made things worse, and the French government clearly doesn’t like that.
French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said, “We reject any use of this tragedy, which has left a French family in sorrow, for political purposes.
We have nothing to learn, especially about violence, from the international far-right movement.”
Kushner refusing to come to talk about the incident is completely unacceptable and shows a serious lack of respect for his French hosts.
An ambassador to a close ally should act with dignity and intelligence. This is what happens when you let criminals pay their way into important positions.
