Michigan’s increasingly heated Senate race has produced an unusual new campaign moment, and this time it wasn’t the candidate standing in front of the cameras.
It was his wife.
Kristi Rogers, the wife of Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, was filmed approaching motorists at a Detroit gas station while handing out $10 gasoline gift cards and encouraging people to consider voting for her husband.
The encounter was captured by Detroit journalist Sam Robinson, who spotted Rogers in a bright red pantsuit, wearing a campaign sticker bearing her husband’s name.
In one exchange, Rogers approached a man who had already finished filling his vehicle.
“You should have gotten me before you filled up. I’ve got a $10 gift card!” she told him.
The footage quickly attracted attention as Michigan drivers continued dealing with elevated gasoline prices, a major issue in the Senate contest between Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed.
El-Sayed has criticized Rogers over his support for Donald Trump and the administration’s policies, including the war with Iran and its impact on energy costs.
The sight of a Senate candidate’s wife personally distributing small gasoline gift cards while promoting her husband’s campaign offered an unusual contrast to the much larger economic debate taking place across Michigan.
It also raised questions about the rules governing gifts to prospective voters.
Importantly, the available footage does not establish that Rogers conditioned the gift cards on anyone voting for her husband. She reportedly asked recipients to consider supporting him, which is not the same as requiring their votes in exchange for a benefit.
Whether any election laws were violated would depend on additional facts, including the circumstances under which the cards were distributed.
Still, the campaign tactic was certainly memorable.
And with the November election approaching, the footage provides another glimpse into the lengths political campaigns are going to in their efforts to win over voters.
