Donald Trump lashed out at an NBC News reporter Friday after she repeatedly questioned his defense of a controversial campaign advertisement targeting Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton.
The exchange began when Trump was asked about an ad supporting Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. The advertisement features Acton’s estranged mother criticizing her own daughter and urging voters not to elect her governor.
But the family’s history includes disturbing allegations of childhood sexual abuse — a detail that became central to the reporter’s questions.
“A mother is saying, don’t put my daughter there because she’s a terrible person and she’s a liar,” Trump said, defending the advertisement. “Why shouldn’t somebody use that?”
NBC News correspondent Monica Alba pressed him.
“But do the sexual abuse allegations mean nothing to you?”
Trump attempted to turn the question into a hypothetical about his own family.
“Let me ask you, if my mother said—”
Alba interrupted.
“But do the sexual abuse allegations make no difference? They make no difference to you?”
The president immediately demanded to know her employer.
“Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, slow down. Who are you with? Who are you with?”
“I’m with NBC, sir,” Alba replied.
“One of the worst networks you have!” Trump shot back.
But Alba continued pressing the underlying issue.
“There are very serious sexual abuse allegations,” she said.
“Quiet!” Trump ordered.
When the reporter again asked whether those allegations made any difference to him, Trump turned to a personal attack.
“Isn’t she a fresh person? You’re a horrible little reporter, aren’t you?”
The confrontation centered on a deeply painful chapter of Acton’s childhood.
Acton has said that she was sexually abused by her stepfather. Court records concerning a 1978 case document that her stepfather was charged with rape. He pleaded not guilty and later became a fugitive; the charge did not result in a confirmed conviction.
Acton’s mother remained with the man accused of abusing her daughter, according to accounts of the family’s history.
That background makes her appearance in a political advertisement attacking Acton’s credibility especially controversial.
Alba explicitly raised the issue with Trump.
“She stayed with a stepfather who was charged with raping his stepdaughter in 1978, sir.”
Trump responded that he knew nothing about the stepfather.
“I don’t know anything about a stepfather,” he said, before complaining about the reporter’s persistence.
“Boy, this one just keeps talking. You just keep talking.”
“I’m answering you,” Alba replied.
Trump continued defending the advertisement, insisting that the estranged mother’s criticism of her daughter was politically relevant.
“I know that recently a mother got on television and said that her daughter should not be governor of Ohio,” he said.
He described the woman as intelligent and argued that her willingness to criticize her daughter made the ad powerful.
“If I had that ad— I should be so lucky to have an ad like that,” Trump said.
He repeatedly returned to the same argument: if a candidate’s own mother says she should not hold office, voters should be allowed to hear it.
“This has nothing to do with a stepfather or anything else,” Trump insisted.
“To me, that’s something that’s very much fair game.”
But that was precisely the point Alba had been challenging.
The controversy is not simply that a mother criticized her daughter. It is that a campaign chose to feature a family member whose relationship with the candidate is inseparable from a documented sexual abuse case and a bitter family rupture.
Trump defended the political value of the advertisement while declining to engage substantively with the questions about that history.
And when the reporter continued demanding an answer, he attacked her personally.
The confrontation ended with the president standing by the ad — and the question about the sexual abuse allegations still hanging over his defense of it.
