Former President Barack Obama has weighed in on Donald Trump’s escalating confrontation with the White House press — and he used Fox News to make his point.
Speaking at Colgate University in New York, Obama addressed the Trump administration’s decision to revoke White House access for journalists from CNN, POLITICO and MS NOW.
The former president argued that the episode would once have been almost impossible to imagine in American politics.
Then he reached back to his own presidency.
(Watch the video below.)
“I’m trying to think what would have happened if I had said, ‘You know what, Fox News, you’re out of here!’” Obama said.
“It’s unimaginable.”
The remark came as Trump’s threat against the three news organizations moved from social media into actual enforcement.
Trump announced Friday that CNN, POLITICO and MS NOW would no longer be permitted inside the White House, accusing the organizations of publishing “fake news.”
By Saturday, reporters were discovering that the order was real.
CNN senior White House reporter Betsy Klein arrived and found that her credential had been deactivated. MS NOW White House reporter Akayla Gardner was also denied access, while POLITICO said White House reporter Cheyenne Haslett was turned away and her credential confiscated.
The White House Correspondents’ Association quickly condemned the action.
Jacqui Heinrich — the association’s president and a senior White House correspondent for Fox News — said revoking the journalists’ access “violates the First Amendment” and called for the administration to immediately restore their credentials.
That makes Obama’s reference to Fox particularly striking in the current context.
But there is also some history worth noting.
Obama’s relationship with Fox News was frequently combative. In 2009, his administration attempted to exclude Fox from a specific round of interviews with a Treasury official. Other television networks objected, and Fox ultimately participated.
That episode was not the same as a blanket ban on Fox News reporters entering the White House, but it remains relevant context when comparing the two administrations’ battles with the press.
The current confrontation involves journalists from three organizations losing access to the White House itself.
Trump has defended the move by arguing that the government should not have to accommodate organizations whose reporting he considers dishonest. He has also suggested that additional outlets could face similar treatment.
The affected news organizations have rejected that reasoning and said they intend to continue covering the administration.
Obama’s comments now add another former president’s voice to the debate.
Rather than simply condemning Trump’s decision, he asked his audience to imagine the political reaction if the roles had been reversed during his presidency — with Fox News on the receiving end.
And he summed up that hypothetical in three words:
“It’s unimaginable.”

Yeah it’s “unimaginable” but Jesus foretold the unimaginable 2000 years ago: Read Matthew 24. What Trump did is doing right now and will do in the future were all foretold by Jesus in Matthew 24. But Jesus also foretold God’s response to what Trump did is doing now and what he will do in the future: “…Woe to him through who they come.” (Luke 17:1) What is the nature of that Woe? “I will fill Hell with Jinn and Humans altogether – A Multitude from Every Community.” (Quran 11:119) Trump has to earn his Hole-In-Hell before Allah will send The Angel of Death to him to take him away to Hell. The Crime has to fit The Punishment. Trump is “just getting started” (as he has said himself) in the Way of Unimaginable Crimes Against Humanity. Amen?
