Donald Trump and his supporters are considering a plan to ask lawmakers to back a resolution that would remove the two impeachments from his first term, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. The report was based on conversations with people who know about the matter.
This resolution would be more about showing support than changing anything legally.
Trump was not convicted in the Senate during either of the impeachments. Experts say the resolution wouldn’t have much legal effect because the Constitution doesn’t provide a way to undo impeachment.
When asked about the resolution, Trump said, “It should be done because I did nothing wrong.
It was a rigged deal — it was a whole rigged situation.”
The resolution might force Republican lawmakers, who are already facing tough times in the upcoming midterms, to talk about Trump’s past actions related to his 2019 and 2021 impeachments.
These impeachments involved charges of abuse of power, obstruction of Congress, and inciting an insurrection.
Some Republican lawmakers told The Journal that they would not consider the resolution until after the November elections.
They also said it might be hard to get enough votes to pass it.
The first impeachment happened because Trump tried to stop military funding to Ukraine unless the country investigated former Vice President Joe Biden, who was a Democratic presidential candidate at the time.
The second impeachment came after Trump left office in 2021. It was related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and his role in the deadly January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
