Robert De Niro has never exactly been shy about telling Americans what he thinks of Donald Trump.
But his latest appearance with Amy Poehler took a dramatically different turn.
The 83-year-old Oscar winner became visibly emotional during an appearance on Poehler’s Good Hang podcast as the conversation turned toward his willingness to use his enormous public platform to speak out about Trump and the direction of the country.
Poehler praised De Niro for continuing to speak publicly about issues he cares about, telling the legendary actor that it mattered to see someone in his position refusing to remain silent.

That was when De Niro began to tear up.
For a few moments, the famously tough Hollywood icon struggled to compose himself.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Poehler reassured him, telling De Niro that there was no need to apologize.
Then he explained why the subject had hit him so hard.
De Niro said it was deeply upsetting to watch what was happening in America and expressed concern that the consequences of the Trump era could extend far beyond Trump himself.
The actor has been one of Hollywood’s most outspoken Trump critics for years, repeatedly using interviews, speeches and public appearances to warn about what he sees as the dangers of Trump’s politics.
But this time there was no punchline and no angry tirade.
There was simply an emotional De Niro trying to explain why he believes the stakes are so high.
And after collecting himself, he turned the conversation toward what comes next.
His message was simple.
“You have to fight,” De Niro said.
He urged people not to retreat into silence, arguing that Americans need to find others who share their concerns and stand together.
The moment was particularly striking coming from an actor whose public image has been built around some of the toughest characters in American cinema.
This wasn’t Travis Bickle or Jake LaMotta.
It was Robert De Niro, visibly shaken while talking about the country he has spent years warning is heading in the wrong direction.
Poehler’s response made the exchange even more emotional.
Rather than immediately moving on, she thanked De Niro for continuing to speak publicly and for being willing to put his reputation behind the causes he believes matter.
De Niro eventually regained his composure.
But the tears had already turned what could have been another celebrity interview into something considerably more personal.
After years of delivering furious warnings about Donald Trump, Robert De Niro didn’t need another blistering insult this time.
His reaction said plenty on its own.

Now his own government’s watchdog has released a report that paints a considerably more troubling picture.
The Defense Department’s inspector general has found that the Iran war has created “strategic inventory shortfalls” in U.S. munitions while exposing serious bottlenecks in America’s ability to replenish some of the weapons being burned through in the conflict.
That is quite a development considering what Trump told Americans earlier this year.
