Yep, you read that right.
In one of the wildest political twists we’ve seen in years, Democratic candidate Cindy Burbank defeated anti-abortion Republican-backed candidate William Forbes — and then immediately announced she’s stepping aside.
Why? Because beating Republican Senator Pete Ricketts matters more than personal ambition.
Instead of risking a split vote, Burbank is clearing the lane for Dan Osborn, a populist, pro-union independent who’s already surging in the polls and giving Republicans absolute nightmares.
“I don’t wanna split the ballot,” Burbank told The New York Times after her victory. “I have no expectations of being able to win in November.”
That’s called putting country over ego.
And Republicans should be worried. A recent Tavern Research poll showed Osborn leading Ricketts by FIVE points in deep-red Nebraska.
The GOP thought this seat would be safe. Now they’re staring down the possibility of losing it because voters are fed up with billionaire politicians and MAGA extremism.
Cindy Burbank just did something almost unheard of in modern politics: she sacrificed her own shot at power because she believed it gave Nebraska a better chance at real representation.
More leaders should take notes.
Let’s go, Dan Osborn.
