Government investigators tested around 50 military officers and civilian workers from the Joint Staff with polygraph exams in August. They wanted to find out if these people had shared secret military information with journalists, including stories about how the war in Iran has used up important American weapons.
These tests happened after several reports said there were fewer long-range missiles and Patriot interceptors left.
This wasn’t a normal security check.
Retired Rear Adm.
Donald Guter, the Navy’s former top legal officer, told The New York Times, “I’ve never seen polygraphs used so widely or on such high-ranking people.In my experience, this is unheard of.”
The move seems to do more than just find possible leakers.
It also sends a message to people across the Pentagon about how they should interact with the press.
A Pentagon spokesperson, Sean Parnell, wouldn’t talk about the investigation.
He said the department “takes all leaks of classified security information very seriously” and that protecting such info is key to national security and safety for American soldiers.
This is happening at a time when the Pentagon and journalists are getting more tense, especially since Secretary of War Crimes Pete Hegseth is in charge.
President Trump has called reporting on the Iran war and weapon shortages “treasonous,” and Hegseth has limited journalists’ access and started several leak investigations.
There’s a dark irony here.
Hegseth was criticized last year for sending secret military information in an unencrypted Signal group.
Since then, top officers have been fired or forced out.
Journalists have faced more restrictions, and now members of the Joint Staff are being tested with polygraphs as part of a search for those who shared military secrets with reporters.
The Pentagon has the right to keep real classified information safe.
However, Americans also have a right to know the truth about how the military is run on their behalf — including bad news like run-out weapons, strategic mistakes, and disagreements within the military ranks.
A military that hunts down uncomfortable facts while pushing experienced officers out isn’t accountability.
It’s an effort to make sure only the official story is the one people talk about.
