In a remarkable break with his family’s Republican political tradition, Neil Bush, the brother of former President George W. Bush and son of former President George H. W. Bush, has publicly announced that he voted for Democrat James Talarico in the Texas Senate race.
And he didn’t stop there.
In a lengthy Facebook statement, Bush criticized Republican nominee Ken Paxton, condemned Donald Trump’s influence on the Republican Party and explained why he believes character matters more than political loyalty.
“I have never posted a political message on Facebook not wanting to offend friends whose views may be very different than mine,” Bush wrote. “I’m breaking that tradition because I voted early today, and I voted for James Talarico for the United States Senate.”
His decision, he explained, was driven by serious concerns about Paxton and genuine admiration for Talarico.
“My vote was motivated by two things: deep concern about Ken Paxton’s record and genuine admiration for the character and principles I see in James Talarico.”
Bush singled out Paxton’s efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election, when the Texas attorney general sought to overturn election results in other states after Trump’s defeat.
“I believe that effort was an affront to our democratic institutions and the peaceful transfer of power,” Bush wrote.
He also pointed to Paxton’s impeachment by the Republican-controlled Texas House. Paxton was subsequently acquitted by the state Senate.
Then Bush turned his attention directly to Trump.
“More broadly, I believe Donald Trump and those who have enabled him have done enormous damage to the Republican Party,” he declared.
“I worry about a political culture in which loyalty to an individual takes precedence over loyalty to principle, and where those who hold power begin to believe they are no longer accountable.”
Those are striking words from someone whose family has been central to Republican politics for generations.
But Bush emphasized that his vote was not simply a protest against Paxton.
He praised Talarico’s approach to politics, particularly his willingness to engage respectfully with people who disagree with him.
“I’ve never met James Talarico, but I have been enormously impressed by the way he approaches complicated and controversial issues,” Bush wrote.
“He speaks with respect, seeks common ground, and seems genuinely interested in bringing people together rather than driving them apart.”
Bush also praised Talarico’s religious convictions, describing his faith as a source of humility and compassion rather than a political weapon.
The endorsement carries particular symbolic weight in Texas, where the Bush family has held enormous political influence for decades.
Neil Bush is not the only member of the family to show support for Talarico. Barbara Bush, the daughter of George W. Bush, has also contributed financially to the Democrat’s campaign.
Whether those gestures translate into significant Republican crossover votes remains uncertain. But they demonstrate that opposition to Paxton and Trump’s political approach extends beyond the Democratic Party.
Bush made clear that he still considers many traditional Republican principles important.
“I have been a Republican for most of my life, and I still believe deeply in many traditional Republican principles,” he wrote.
“But character matters more than party affiliation. Our democracy depends on leaders who respect our institutions, tell the truth, accept accountability, and seek to unite rather than divide.”
He closed with a message that captured the significance of his decision.
“Today, I voted against a style of politics that I believe has damaged our country. More importantly, I voted for the kind of character and leadership I hope will help heal it.”
For a Republican who carries one of the most recognizable names in American conservative politics, that is no ordinary endorsement.
It is a public declaration that loyalty to a party should never come before loyalty to democratic principles — and that, in this Texas Senate race, Neil Bush believes James Talarico has earned his vote.
