Barack Obama has finally shared the “truth” about the biggest controversy from his presidency: the tan suit.
Obama brought back one of the weirdest stories from his time in the White House for the end of David’s new HBO comedy, “Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness,” which was made by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions.
It all started because of Larry David.
In the scene, David plays an unlucky aide who messed up Obama’s original suit before an important press meeting, leaving the president with only one other option.
Obama holds up the tan suit and says, “It’s a great suit,” as David encourages him.
“Oh boy, oh boy.I think this is the move.”
Obama later walks out in the suit, even wearing the same striped tie he had on August 28, 2014.
“You sure about this?” Obama asks.“Never been more sure about anything in my life,” David replies.
As Obama heads to his press conference, passing by a whole row of regular dark suits, David delivers the punchline: “People are going to be talking about this for a long, long time.”
He was right about that, wasn’t he?
Obama posted the clip himself on Saturday, writing: “People always ask me where the tan suit came from.
I think it’s time the truth finally came out.”
For those who might have forgotten Tan Suitgate, Obama wore the light-colored suit during a White House press briefing in 2014, and some Republicans reacted like he’d arrived in a bathrobe.
Then-Rep.
Peter King of New York responded in a way that has since become classic comedy.
“There’s no way, I don’t think, any of us can excuse what the president did yesterday,” King said at the time.
“I mean, you have the world watching.”
What Obama did was wear a tan suit while discussing the economy and foreign policy.
What the Republicans did was try—and famously failed—to create a scandal involving the Obamas that would stick.
It stuck, but not in the way King or Fox News had hoped.
Obama has laughed about this for years.
In 2020, he said his “big scandal” was wearing a suit he thought “was pretty sharp,” even mentioning that he’d worn it to church that spring.
