Senator Paul, the chair of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, was among several conservative lawmakers who asked questions about the federal government’s response to the pandemic over several hours.
Fauci, the former chief medical advisor in the White House, used the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times during the hearing.
This legal right is typically used to avoid answering questions that might be incriminating.
Fauci has not been charged, convicted, or proven guilty of any crimes.

Paul claimed that Fauci misled Congress and approved funding for overseas experiments that may have contributed to the virus’s spread.
Fauci has denied this, stating that his National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases did not fund such research in China.
Paul has insisted that he did.
Fauci received a pardon for any potential federal crimes from then-President Joe Biden, two years after he retired.
After the Capitol Hill hearing, Paul told journalists that he still plans to vote on holding Fauci in contempt of Congress next week.
He said, “That’s the vote that will happen in committee next week, it will be on contempt of Congress,” Paul, 63, told reporters.
He continued, “We believe with his liability, his immunity from criminal liability, that he didn’t need to hide behind the Fifth Amendment and that maybe the Fifth Amendment doesn’t attach when you have a pardon in place.”
He added that the ability to plead the Fifth again would be a legal question.
Paul also said, “But the question on contempt will be voted on and then there’s a question of whether or not the Department of Justice will take it up.”
Fauci, 85, responded to Paul during the hearing by saying, “The sole reason he is calling me before this committee is to prompt me to say something, anything, that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up, in his words, ‘behind bars.'”
