After Lindsey Graham passed away suddenly on Sunday, a social media message from him that had been shared before came back into view — it was a message from 2016 where he expressed concerns about then-President Donald Trump.
Graham was one of the first and most outspoken critics of Trump before the 2016 election.
He ran against Trump in the early primaries and didn’t support him even after Trump won the nomination. In fact, he didn’t give his support during the general election either. However, Graham later became a strong ally of Trump and often played golf with him during his first and second terms.
But on Sunday, it was Graham’s May 2016 warning about Trump that caught the attention of many people on the left.
He wrote, “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed…….and we will deserve it.”
The message was posted on May 3, 2016 — the same day as the Indiana primary, which became the turning point for Trump’s remaining GOP rivals, Ted Cruz and John Kasich.
Both of them left the race shortly after Trump won the state by a large margin, securing all 57 of its delegates.
