A judge has stopped President Donald Trump from trying to avoid paying $5.8 million that a New York court said he owes to writer E.Jean Carroll.Court documents show that Judge Lewis Kaplan rejected Trump’s request to delay the payment and ordered the money to be sent on Tuesday.
According to court records and Lawfare’s senior editor, Roger Parloff, this decision was made on Saturday.
On Friday, Trump claimed he needed more time so his new lawyer could catch up with the case.
But Carroll’s lawyer, Robbie Kaplan, said that was just an excuse. He wrote, “The defendant’s claim that he can’t respond to the plaintiff’s motion on the court’s timeline seems to be another attempt to buy time.” Robbie Kaplan added, “We can only assume that the defendant is trying to get more time to come up with a new way to avoid paying the plaintiff.”
Parloff, who posted the documents online on Saturday, pointed out that Trump’s new attorney is Josh Halpern and that the motion had a major problem.
He wrote on X, “Trump knew for five months that his lead attorney was leaving. He has co-counsel who has been on the case from the beginning.”
The judge agreed with this assessment.
These motions came after the Supreme Court turned down Trump’s appeal of the case.In 2023, a jury found that Trump had sexually abused Carroll in a New York store dressing room in the mid-1990s.The jury also ruled that Trump had defamed Carroll by denying the allegations. The verdict included $5 million in damages.
