A top Iranian politician told President Donald Trump that “no American soldier will come back alive” if the U.S.tries to take over or attack Iran’s key Kharg Island oil site, after Trump suggested the U.S.might take control of it.
The warning came after Trump spoke at a NATO meeting in Turkey.
The remarks followed a night of fighting between the U.S.and Iran, which led Trump to say the ceasefire with Tehran was “over.”
Trump said that during the attacks on Tuesday night, the U.S.
hit part of Kharg Island and hinted that more military action might happen. He said, “We attacked Kharg Island last night, knocked out a piece.I said, ‘Don’t touch the oil, because maybe we’ll take over Kharg Island.’ I said, ‘Don’t hit the pipes, just hit everything else.’ And they hit it.They may hit it again tonight.”
Ebrahim Rezaei, a spokesperson for the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, responded directly to Trump on X, writing (translation provided by X): “Come – we are waiting for you – and we promise that not a single American soldier will return alive.”
Kharg Island, located off Iran’s southern coast, is the country’s most important oil export terminal, usually handling around 90% of Iranian crude oil exports.
Earlier, the Trump administration looked into military options that could include taking over Kharg Island or carrying out strikes to damage its oil infrastructure.
Officials also reportedly thought about seizing other islands near the Strait of Hormuz to limit Iran’s ability to threaten commercial ships.
The island was attacked during clashes in April, but the administration said that oil facilities were not targeted.
