Hillary Clinton lived in the White House, where she raised her daughter and hosted state dinners. She spent eight years working in those halls as the First Lady of the United States. On Friday, she shared a photo showing how it looks now.
It resembles a construction site, filled with scaffolding, rubble, barriers, and chaos.
Her caption read, “This is what Trump’s done to the people’s house: A third of it is rubble. Another third is a cage match. What a metaphor.” She is correct on both points.
Trump has been managing a huge renovation of the White House, including building an extravagant ballroom where the East Wing used to be.
This project has turned one of America’s important public buildings into something that looks more like an expansion of Mar-a-Lago. Parts of the building are literally in ruins as the work continues.
As for the “cage match” comment, that refers to the administration itself, which has been full of firings, resignations, conflicts, and scandals.
The DHS secretary was fired, the DNI resigned, the FBI director faced humiliation in Congress, the acting attorney general was questioned for hours about Epstein and slush funds, and the cabinet can’t even go a week without a new corruption story.
The White House is owned by the American people, not Trump to tear down and rebuild to fit his own lavish tastes.
The ballroom in the East Wing alone is costing taxpayers millions, with no-bid contracts, tight deadlines, and a troubling pattern of financial issues that has led to investigations by inspectors general in several agencies.
Hillary Clinton has been labeled many things by this administration and its supporters, but she understands that building.
She knows what it is meant to stand for and how it looked before a third of it was turned to rubble for the sake of a billionaire’s design choices. “What a metaphor,” indeed. A house that is half destroyed and half in chaos, completely taken over by one man’s pride.
This is what Trump's done to the people's house:
